"In 1869 Rev. Alanson T. WOOD came to Nebraska commissioned by the Home Mission Board. He began preaching at Helena where a church was built which was the fore-runner of the present Hopewell Presbyterian Church, located about seven miles south of Unadilla. This church was organized by Rev. NC. ROBINSON, District Missionary, on June 13, 1874.
On Sunday evening, March 23, 1913, both church and manse were completely destroyed by a cyclone. Rev. O.J. HANMANT, L L sustained some painful bruises and narrowly escaped death. The little folk pledged sufficient funds to build another church edifice and manse. Mrs. Marlan CAMERON, a charter member, and her four sons were the prime movers in bringing the new buildings to their completion.
The new church was dedicated in June 1914 by Rev. Thomas K. HUNTER, D.D., and Rev. Julius F. SCHWARZ, D.D. Mother CAMERON was the last surviving charter member present at the dedication. She was born May 6, 1833 and died Feb. 18, 1920." (1)
"Hopewell Presbyterian Church, located 1 mile west and 5 miles south of Unadilla, was organized June 13, 1874. The first six years worship services were held in a schoolhouse 2 miles east and 1 mile south of the present location. A house of worship was built in 1879 and the manse soon after. Easter Sunday, March 23, 1913, a destructive tornado demolished both the church and parsonage. A new church and parsonage was built the following year and dedicated on June 21, 1914, just 40 years after its beginning. A basement was added in 1946.
Of the original nine charter member families, one name has been continuously active and is now in the fourth generation - that of the Cameron family. The cemetery adjacent to the church serves as a resting place for many pioneers of this Community. Charter members:
Donald McDonald & wife, Allen Cameron & wife, J.H. Davidson & wife, A.G. Howard & wife, Joseph Green & wife, Duncan McIntyre & wife, Thomas Monroe, Mrs. Mary A.B. Rodgers, Mary Jane Howard." (2)
